Safeway in Kona, Queens’ Marketplace in Waikoloa, or Puu Huluhulu for guests coming from the Hilo side.

  • 6:15 am in the parking lot of the Kona Safeway: 75-971 Henry St, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
    Safeway is open 24 hours and the Starbucks inside opens at 6am.
    (For guests staying in Kailua-Kona and Captain Cook)
  • 7:00 am in the parking lot by Starbucks at Queens’ Marketplace: 69-201 Waikōloa Beach Dr 1001 K-1, Waikoloa Village, HI 96738 This Starbucks opens at 5am but the Island Gourmet Markets at The Queens’ Marketplace don’t open until 7am, when we need to leave by. (For guests staying in Waikoloa and Waimea)
  • 8:00 am in the Pu’u Huluhulu Cinder cone parking lot for guests staying on the Hilo side. The parking lot is on the South side of Hawaii Route 200 aka Saddle Road, directly across from the highway’s intersection with the Mauna Kea Access Road. (For guests staying in Hilo, Pāhoa and Volcano)

Participation requirements

  • This tour involves a 1 -2 mile walk on uneven and often wet terrain in search of Hawaiian endemic birds with a slight incline. Walking sticks and foldable stools are recommended for those with difficulty standing and walking for several hours at a time. Please note that the refuge access road requires four wheel drive and the ride in our 4×4 12 passenger van will be bumpy.
  • The trail difficulty is not challenging but conditions may be cool, wet and slippery with an incline. We will be birding between 6,000′and 6,500′above sea level on Mauna Kea with temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, in an area that receives 80 -100″ of rainfall per year (misty afternoon rain is typical).

Cancellation for group trips: All daily tours have a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel prior to 48 hours of the start of the tour, you will receive a full refund. 
If you cancel within 48 hours of your scheduled trip departure, no refund fees will be provided.
 No-shows are responsible for 100% of trip fees.

Cancellation for private tours: There is a 7-day cancellation policy for all private tours. Credit cards will be taken at the time of booking. If you cancel outside of 7 days, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel within 7 days of the tour no refund fees will be provided. No-shows are responsible for 100% of trip fees.
