Kauai’s Best Birds

Daily 7am-4pm

Embark on an adventure into the lush rainforests of Kokee to find endemic forest birds before we explore the coastlines for endemic water birds with breath taking vistas of Waimea Canyon along the way. This full day trip is a great introduction to Kauai’s wildlife, with short, casual walks, for the birder and non-birder alike, along Kauai’s rugged west side.

Highlight Target Species

Kauai Amakihi, Kauai Elepaio, Apapane, Anianiau, Erckel’s Francolin, White-tailed Tropicbird, Hwamei, Short-eared Owl, Hawaiian Coot, Hawaiian Duck, Hawaiian Goose, Hawaiian Stilt, Hawaiian Gallinule

“We birded the whole island, changing from forest birds to sea birds. It was a great tour and really nice to get out of the city. I was able to see plenty of species too! Highly recommend!”

Activity Level

This tour involves a lot of standing and short, casual walks on uneven, wet terrain with frequent stops, getting in and out of the tour van.

Recommendations

Lightweight long pants, waterproof hiking shoes, lightweight sweater/fleece, camera, binoculars, sun protection, quick dry layered clothing, a daypack for carrying your lunch and water into the field, and rain gear, as the trail difficulty is not challenging but conditions may be cool, wet and slippery with an incline. We will be birding around 4,000” above sea level on with temperatures between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, adjacent to an area that receives 400″ of rainfall per year.
